Concert Reviews: Maxïmo Park- 17/08/2007
Maxïmo Park Friday, 17th of August, 2007 – Prince Bandroom, St Kilda. (Support: Ghostwood & DJ Steve Wide) Setlist: Girls Who Play Guitars Now I'm All Over The Shop A Fortnight's Time Parisian Skies Our Velocity Postcard Of A Painting Your Urge Limassol By The Monument Books From Boxes The Coasts is Always Changing Sandblasted And Set Free Apply Some Pressure The Unshockable Graffiti Encore Nosebleed Going Missing ------------------------ Strangly enough there was not a big crowd lining up for the one and only sold out Melbourne show from British Indie-rockers, Maxïmo Park. Therefore it was quite easy getting a front row spot in the left pocket in front of the stage. Coming into this concert I had only been a fan of Maximo Park for about four months, after being recommended to them by a good mate. Before any bands played DJ Steve Wide took control of the P.A system with his DJ selection of indie-rock tunes to get the crowd pumped for Maxïmo Park. This was a wonderful idea to have Steve Wide playing during every intermission (before both bands and after both bands), it helped me stop being impatient for Maxïmo Park to jump on stage. The support was originally set to be Australia's rising teen-band Operator Please, although due to the leadsinger having an illness the support slot was given to Ghostwood. Ghostwood were quite average, the only thing that kept me interested was the fascinating guitar sounds. The biggest disappointment of the band was the lead singer, he didn't have one little bit of a rockstar look visually and he certainly did not sound like a rockstar. The vocals were hard to hear and hard to understand. At the end of the set the fascinating guitarists left his final guitar stroke playing for a minute or so...quite irritating. The setlists were placed right in front of us, so we did not have any suprises in the setlist unfortuntly. Finally it was time for Maxïmo Park to set to the Prince Of Wales venue alive. The men from North-East England begun the night with my favourite track 'Girls Who Play Guitars'. From the start until the very end of the show Paul Smith demostrated how entertaining and energetic he was. If I was a born a female I just know I'd fall in love with him. He danced with the microphone stand and pulled out some funny dance moves. Through-out the night the bass player, Archis Tiku did not show one moment of rock-star antics. It seemed Archis was hiding in the darkest corner playing to a crowd of thirty people. One of the highlights of the nights was the performance of Maxïmo Park's hit single, 'Apply Some Pressure'. Each member from Maxïmo Park were drinking Melbourne Bitter for the night. You'd think for a band that had a #2 album in the UK, they would be drinking Corona's or Becks. The english-men finished the night off with a two-song encome featuring Nosebleed and Going Missing. ------------------------ Overall Set-List: 9 Artists Performance: 8.5 Self-Enjoyment: 8 Total: 25.5/30 Fri 17 Aug – Maxïmo Park, Operator Please, Ghostwood
